AB-1199 Medical staff: health care provider credentialing

AB 1199 proposed a three-year medical-staff reappointment and competency-review interval.

Illustrative artwork. Fictional scene, not a photograph of the people or events in this story.

What happened

AB 1199’s retained enrolled proposal would change medical-staff reappointment and recurring competency provisions from the existing annual or biennial framework to at least every three years. It addresses medical-staff governance under the Medical Practice Act and the governing bodies of general acute care and acute psychiatric hospitals. The proposal would prohibit CDPH from requiring routine reappointments more frequently than every three years; it remained pending during the September 13–19 coverage window.

The proposed interval does not remove the requirement to demonstrate competence at the initial appointment or the medical staff’s responsibility for professional and ethical standards. The retained text preserves self-governance, periodic clinical review, accurate records and equal professional treatment of MD and DO licensees, subject to the stated provisions. A longer routine cycle therefore would not itself renew privileges, eliminate other credentialing obligations or resolve a specific competence concern. Hospitals would need to compare the final applicable law, bylaws and other governing requirements before extending a review cycle.
