AB-1794 Pharmacy: enteral nutrition supplements or replacements
Sep 27, 2026 edition · GC-2026-0066 · Published 2026-09-27 · Version 2 · Proposed
AB 1794 proposes a defined direct-to-home enteral medical-food delivery arrangement conditioned on a valid order and pharmacist standards.
What happened
AB 1794 proposes allowing a pharmacist, manufacturer or wholesaler to participate in an arrangement to deliver enteral nutrition supplements or replacements directly to a patient’s residence. The text requires a valid order from a prescriber acting within the prescriber’s scope and pharmacist services consistent with the accepted standard of care. During the covered week this remains a proposed pathway, rather than a general exemption from pharmacy law or a newly available shipping permission.
The proposal defines the covered supplements or replacements as medical food used therapeutically to prevent serious disability or death in patients whose medically diagnosed conditions preclude full use of regular food. That definition does not encompass every consumer nutritional supplement. The surrounding statute retains dangerous-drug/device prescribing rules and the separate regulated direct-distribution pathway for home dialysis products. A proposed enteral arrangement therefore needs product, order, participant and pharmacist-role review rather than reliance on the fact that another home-delivery category already exists.
