NRC seeks December 4 comments on sunset-rule reporting collections

NRC requests December 4 comments on information-collection changes associated with proposed sunset rulemaking. The notice estimates reduced exemption-request reporting for specified applicants and licensees but does not itself remove those regulatory duties.

What happened

NRC's October 5 PRA notice seeks comments on its intention to request OMB approval for information collections associated with proposed sunset changes. It identifies applicants and licensees under 10 CFR parts 34, 35, 36, and 39, including part 35 medical-use licensees, as affected by planned reporting removals. No OMB control number had yet been assigned. Comments received by December 4 are assured consideration; later comments may be considered when practical.

The background ties the collection changes to proposed deregulation and sunset of requirements including exemption requests, estimating reductions of 34 annual responses, 34 respondents, and 450 hours. Those negative figures are burden-reduction estimates, not a new requirement for negative reports or proof that the removals are already effective. NRC asks about practical utility, estimate accuracy, clarity, and ways to minimize burden. The PRA consultation does not by itself amend an individual license, authorize disregard of a current condition, or complete the separate substantive rulemaking.

Why it matters

Part 35 medical-use licensees may have relevant experience. The notice describes reduced exemption-request reporting but does not itself enact those removals or terminate a license obligation.
