O-desmethyltramadol correction clarifies controlled derivatives
Oct 11, 2026 edition · GC-2026-0289 · Published 2026-10-11 · Version 3 · Final
DEA's October 9 correction adds omitted derivative language to the temporary Schedule I entry for O-desmethyltramadol. It applies back to the August 12, 2026 scheduling date and remains effective through August 12, 2028, preserving the difference between publication, applicability, and temporary duration.
What happened
DEA published an October 9 correcting amendment to the August 12 temporary scheduling order for O-desmethyltramadol, also called O-DSMT or desmetramadol. The correction adds the omitted isomers, esters, ethers, salts, and salts of those derivatives to 21 CFR 1308.11(h)(88), with controlled-substance code 9667. DEA explains that the prior order intended derivative coverage but omitted the correct codified wording. This is a correction to the entry rather than the initial placement of the named substance into Schedule I.
The DATES provision makes the amendment effective October 9, 2026 until August 12, 2028 and applicable beginning August 12, 2026. Those three dates describe different aspects of the temporary action and should remain distinct when comparing historical products or records. The retained rule establishes the corrected chemical scope and timing; it does not identify a particular supplier's product, establish an entity's authorization, or determine whether a specific transaction complies with controlled-substance requirements. Product analysis must use the actual named substance and derivative language rather than only a shorthand marketing name.

Why it matters
It is effective October 9 through August 12, 2028, and applicable beginning August 12, 2026; it does not newly schedule ordinary tramadol.
Recommended action
Reconcile controlled-substance nomenclature and research inventory against the corrected O-DSMT entry.
