Guardian and transportation operator charged with theft from vulnerable wards
Oct 4, 2026 edition · GC-2026-0205 · Published 2026-10-04 · Version 2 · Announced
Two Detroit-area defendants were indicted over alleged diversion of vulnerable wards’ money, including transport-vehicle and home-sale transactions.
What happened
DOJ's October 1, 2026 release reports an indictment charging Kijuana Evans and Lonnie Griffin with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud and money laundering. Evans allegedly owned TriState Guardian Services, appointed by the Oakland County Probate Court to act as a fiduciary for incapacitated adults. Griffin allegedly operated non-emergency transport company Key to Life and managed TriState. The charges concern alleged misuse of funds belonging to wards and their estates. An indictment is not evidence of guilt, and both defendants remain presumed innocent unless proved guilty.
The indictment's examples include an alleged $87,000 purchase of a transport van with a ward's money, $180,000 allegedly taken from a ward's home-sale proceeds, and lawsuit-settlement money allegedly deposited in the defendants' own account. These are described transactions, not separate penalties or adjudicated losses. The fiduciary and transport roles matter because related business interests can obscure whether a payment benefits the ward. Independent authorization and reconciliation should test the actual purpose, recipient and ownership of expenditures rather than rely solely on the guardian's authority or an invoice from an affiliated service.
