Miracle-Ear and foundation settle PPP affiliation allegations for $6.47 million
Oct 18, 2026 edition · GC-2026-0362 · Published 2026-10-18 · Version 1 · Settled
Miracle-Ear and its foundation agreed to pay $6,473,222 over alleged PPP ineligibility tied to their multinational corporate affiliations. The government also challenged use of a franchise exemption. The hearing-aid sector connection is explicit, while the conduct concerns financial-assistance certifications rather than clinical claims.
What happened
DOJ announced October 16 that Miracle-Ear, Inc. and Miracle-Ear Foundation agreed to pay $6,473,222 to resolve False Claims Act allegations concerning three Paycheck Protection Program loans. Miracle-Ear received two $1,962,000 loans, in June 2020 and February 2021, and the foundation received $58,100 in May 2020. The announcement states that they do not admit liability. The settlement amount should therefore be distinguished from the individual loan principal amounts and from an adjudicated fraud finding.
Miracle-Ear sells hearing aids through company and franchisee stores, while its foundation supplies free hearing aids to low-income individuals. The government alleged that their affiliation with Amplifon's multinational group made them ineligible under applicable employee-count rules. It also alleged that Miracle-Ear claimed an affiliation exemption for businesses operating as franchisees even though it issued franchises. Two whistleblower suits were resolved, and Blockquote, Inc. will receive $1,154,111.40. The case turns on the applicant's actual corporate role and affiliates, rather than its healthcare mission.

Why it matters
Healthcare businesses and affiliated nonprofits must support financial-assistance certifications using the applicable program rules and complete corporate relationships. Similar names or franchise involvement do not establish eligibility.
