Nice to Know: South Carolina charges power of attorney over care resident’s funds

What happened

An October 13 South Carolina Attorney General release announced the arrest of Dionne L. Robinson on charges of exploitation of a vulnerable adult and financial transaction card fraud involving more than $500 in a six-month period. The office’s Vulnerable Adults and Medicaid Provider Fraud unit investigated the case, and Robinson was booked October 12. These are criminal charges; the release expressly preserves the presumption of innocence and reports no adjudication of guilt.

Investigators allege that Robinson improperly used the resident’s funds or assets while acting as power of attorney and used the resident’s debit card for her own benefit without permission. The person lived in a residential care facility at the time of the alleged misconduct. That setting provides a resident-protection connection, but the release does not identify Robinson as facility staff, accuse the facility of wrongdoing or announce a new duty for care providers.

Why it matters

For resident-protection teams, the case offers an example of alleged financial exploitation by a person holding power of attorney. A resident’s care setting and the role of the accused should be distinguished from institutional misconduct.
