DHCS warns assisted living waiver facilities of denials and reprocessing

DHCS warns that ALW compliance failures can cause nonpayment and reprocessing of earlier paid claims. Its October 9 notice connects eligibility and billing controls with facility-specific follow-up, without announcing one universal correction deadline.

What happened

DHCS says routine Assisted Living Waiver oversight has identified claiming issues requiring Care Coordination Agencies and facilities to take corrective action. Claims may be nonpayable for failure to satisfy program requirements, and previously paid claims are under review for possible reprocessing when payment was erroneous. The notice therefore addresses both prevention of new denials and reconciliation of earlier payments, rather than guaranteeing that an existing payment is final or asserting that every facility billed improperly.

Facilities must verify ALW eligibility before delivering services and submitting claims through DHCS/CCA processes, comply with program and contract standards, use correct codes and modifiers, and maintain accurate claiming documentation. DHCS says additional information will be tailored to facilities with nonpayable claims. Questions go to the ALW claims support address with the facility's name and NPI. That individualized process makes actual eligibility evidence and correspondence material; the public notice does not supply a general deadline or authorize assuming the same correction applies to every resident.
