Guardian and transportation operator charged with theft from vulnerable wards
Oct 11, 2026 edition · GC-2026-0205 · Published 2026-10-11 · Version 4 · Pending litigation
An indictment alleges that guardian Kijuana Evans and transportation operator Lonnie Griffin diverted money from incapacitated adults. DOJ describes transfers involving a vehicle, home-sale proceeds and a lawsuit settlement. These are allegations about ward funds, not adjudicated Medicaid billing losses.
What happened
DOJ’s October 1 announcement reports an indictment charging Kijuana Evans and Lonnie Griffin with wire-fraud conspiracy, wire fraud and money laundering. According to the indictment, Evans owned TriState Guardian Services, appointed as fiduciary for incapacitated adults by the Oakland County Probate Court. Griffin managed TriState and operated Key to Life, a non-emergency transportation company. Court-appointed guardians and conservators are entrusted to manage personal and financial affairs in their wards’ interests; the charges allege misuse of that position.
The alleged diversions include $87,000 from a ward to buy a transit van used by Griffin’s company, $180,000 from a ward’s home sale, and proceeds of a ward’s lawsuit settlement deposited into the defendants’ account. Those sums concern money belonging to wards and their estates, rather than an announced Medicaid recovery. The defendants are presumed innocent, and the indictment is not evidence of guilt. The case-specific oversight concern is the combination of fiduciary authority, related transportation interests and transactions that require independent authorization and reconciliation.
