CMS replaces the October EDI transmittal to update its 276/277 attachment

The current October EDI instruction is September 28 R13977, which replaces R13967 to update the 276/277 flat-file attachment. October 1 effectiveness and October 5 contractor implementation are past milestones, so remaining work concerns actual version and exception validation.

What happened

R13977 expressly rescinds September 18 R13967 and updates the 276/277 flat-file attachment, leaving the other instructions unchanged. It retains October 1 effectiveness and October 5 implementation for the quarterly CCEM front-end edits used by Medicare contractors and shared systems. The earlier two-error correction belongs to the superseded September 18 version; the current cover describes an attachment update. That distinction supports identifying the actual installed release rather than treating every September file as equivalent.

The instruction requires the attached spreadsheets to replace prior versions and explains that the change-log tab contains current-version modifications. Contractors need not repeat completed work but must incorporate the updates. Business requirements address TA1 and 999 acknowledgments, test data, and translator/CCEM flat-file layouts, including 276/277. These are contractor technical directions; the provider action is to verify clearinghouse or vendor implementation and investigate relevant acknowledgment or claim-status exceptions. A published implementation date alone does not establish that an organization installed the correct attachment.

Why it matters

Clearinghouses, billing systems, and revenue-cycle teams that implemented the superseded spreadsheet may apply incorrect front-end edits or misread claim-status responses beginning October 1.
