January 2027 home health grouper uses version 08.0.27

What happened

The September 30 transmittal makes version 08.0.27 applicable to claim From dates on or after January 1, 2027. Its business requirement covers type-of-bill 032x claims other than 32A and 320, while the implementation date is January 4. Those two dates perform different functions: the service-period selection determines which grouper applies, and the implementation date directs the contractor release. A claim submitted later should not automatically be assigned the new version solely because it arrived after installation.

CMS explains that the grouper assigns a Home Health Resource Group using claim and patient-assessment information, including diagnoses. Annual ICD-10-CM changes and quarterly changes in case-mix policy or diagnosis codes can require updated software; the transmittal distinguishes this January release from the October update under CR 14509. CMS links the grouper package and supporting documentation separately. Version selection and test cases should therefore preserve the claim From-date boundary and excluded bill types, rather than treating a vendor installation confirmation as proof that every assessment and claim grouped correctly.
